Biography

The 17th Indiana Infantry was mustered on 1861 12 June. It began in West Virginia but was later transferred south to the Western Theater. The 17th Indiana Infantry was a part of General John T. Wilder's famous "Lightning Brigade", along with the 72nd Indiana Infantry, the 9th and 123rd Illinois Infantry Regiments, and the 18th Indiana Battery of Light Artillery.
