Iona Community

 Organization

Biography

Iona Community is a progressive Christian community on the island of Iona off of the Scottish coast. The island itself has a long religious history, including druids, Ionian Monks, and a Benedictine Abbey.

The community in its current form was founded in 1938 by George MacLeod. MacLeod was a minister in Glasgow during the time of the Great Depression. He took clergies-in-training and unemployed craftsmen to the island to rebuild the old medieval abbey there. When it was finished, it became a small Christian community.

In modern times the church focuses on social and political activism, as well as youth work and interfaith communication.
