Thacher Medicine Company
Biography
Henry Savage Thacher founded the Thacher Medicine Company in 1867 following previous business ventures in hospitality and wartime medicines. Thacher led the company until his death in 1899. Under Thacher’s leadership, the brand gained notoriety in the southeastern United States for products including Dr. Thacher’s Liver and Blood Syrup, Worm Syrup, and Cholera Mixture.
In 1910, John Thomas Lupton, along with his nephew, Frederick William Lupton, and his associate, H. H. Sedberry purchased the Thacher Medicine Company from Henry Savage Thacher with plans to revitalize production. J. T. Lupton was named head of the company, while Frederick Lupton and H. H. Sedberry oversaw the printing plant and manufacturing. Following several lawsuits, leadership of Thacher began talks to sell the company. After a year of negotiations, Allied Drug Products of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania purchased Thacher Medicine Company on 1927 February 15. The deal allowed Allied Drug Products Company to retain the Thacher brand to sell under their umbrella. Allied Drug Products Company dissolved in 1961.
