Biography

Culver H. Smith (1896-1979) was born in North Carolina. He had degrees from Trinity University and Yale University, as well as a Ph.D from Duke University. Smith was a tenured professor at the University of Chattanooga and a visiting professor at Duke University, and the Universities of Kentucky, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. He served as the Head of the History Department at the University of Chattanooga until 1961 and officially retired in 1966. After his retirement he continued his research and publishing, including his book, Press, Politics and Patronage, which he published in 1977.
