Biography

Jean Miles Catino was a resident of Walden, Tennessee and a native of the Walden's Ridge area. Born September 2, 1903, Catino was the daughter of artist and writer Emma Bell Miles. Catino studied art in Chicago and later taught weaving at the Frye Institute in Chattanooga. She also worked as a crafts instructor at a hospital in Memphis. Among her notable works are painted landscapes for a series of waterfowl dioramas at the Museum of Science and Natural History in Miami, and murals at the Ocean Reef Club and at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant; as well as the illustrated map of Signal Mountain, Tennessee she created for the Walden's Ridge Women's Guild. This collection contains Catino's correspondence and papers as well as journals, artwork, and photographs created by Emma Bell Miles, Catino's mother. The Emma Bell Miles content documents mountain life on Walden Ridge in the early 20th century. The collection also includes Catino's correspondence with Emma Bell Miles biographer, Kay Baker Gaston. Materials in the collection are dated from 1866 to 2000.
