Biography

John H. Rous (1912-1995)was born in Meridian, Mississippi, but grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After graduating from Pleasant Hill Academy, Rous studied photography with Arthur Brooks, the primary photographer for the two Chattanooga newspapers at the time.

Biography

Rous had a had a successful career as a photographer. In 1933 he obtained a job at the Washington Herald, in World War II he was the chief of photographers in the Office of War Information, and then he worked at the Associated Press as one of the White House Photographers. Rous also held a number of elected positions in the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA), including the associatings president. He also received many honors throughout his career; including, 34 awards in the WHNPA photo contest, the featur category at The Hague, Netherlands in the World Photo Congress, and was named the 1965 "Man of the Year" by the Cigar Institute of America.

Scope and Contents Working for the Associated Press in the White House, John Rous took photographs of political and military leaders beginning in the 1940s until the early 1970s.
