Facsimile of Reverand T. H. McCallie annotated autobiography, 1901-1912
Scope and Contents
This collection contains a photocopied facsimile of Reverend Thomas Hooke McCallie’s autobiography. The original handwritten autobiography was written by Rev. McCallie between 1901 and 1912, and was photocopied by his granddaughter Anne McCallie in 1976, who appended copies of several photographs, a family tree, and other materials documenting the McCallie family. The autobiography documents Rev. McCallie’s childhood and education in Chattanooga, his attendance at Union Theological Seminary in New York City (1856-1859), and his career in ministry. The autobiography also describes life in Chattanooga during the Civil War and the Reconstruction era, and includes details about the lives of some of the people his father enslaved. The collection also includes a typed transcript of the autobiography that was likely produced sometime between 1990 and 2010, along with photocopy facsimiles of 3 letters from 1905 between Rev. McCallie and his sons Park and Spencer concerning the founding of the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The autobiography and accompanying documents do not include any mention of the trial and lynching of Ed Johnson in 1906, nor the ensuing Supreme Court case United States v. Shipp.
