Mentions that Gilbert’s letter reassures her that she has at least one friend left in the world. She has not heard from anyone at Rhinehart’s and concludes that they no longer love her since she has been unable to write any letters in the last three months. States that the Govans’ trip to New York sounded wonderful. Wants to know Rhinehart’s opinion of the book she and Jim are writing. States that she never sent a copy of the Davidson review to Nation yet, and wonders if Carey McWilliams would like to use it.

Biographical/Historical note

Wilma Dykeman Stokely (1920-2006) was an American writer of fiction and nonfiction, which covered the people and lands of Appalachia. She published her first book, “The French Broad,” in 1955, and she wrote three novels: “The Tall Woman, “The Far Family,” and “Return the Innocent Earth” during her life.
