Series 1: Works

 Series — Box: MS-055 001

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection is comprised of manuscripts and correspondences created by Steele while drafting several of her stories ranging from 1922 to 1992. Some examples of the work found in this collection were never published, while others, like the Mrs. Gaddy stories, were. The body of work represented in this collection illustrates the stages of development Steele’s stories went through before finally being published, or (as in several cases in this collection) were not. Also represented in the collection are correspondences to and from Steele and her publisher, Greenwillow Books of New York concerning several titles. These letters are stored with the drafts of the stories in which they are about. Also included in the collection are permission requests drafted by Steele to publish poetry for her book, The Fifth Day.
