George Connor papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains book manuscripts, essays, lectures, and correspondence with authors, including Robert Penn Warren and C. S. Lewis regarding literature from circa 1920 to 1942. The collection also includes early drafts of his autobiography, The Craft So Long to Learn: A Personal Chronicle of Mind and Spirit, which was published posthumously which was published posthumously by the George Connor Society in 2004 under the title Living with the Word: A Collection of Speeches, Commentaries, Letters & Poems. Material for the publication varies from writings on holidays and religion, speeches in memoriam, book reviews, and letters the author wrote while overseas during World War II.
Also included in the George Connor manuscripts and correspondence collection are a number of letters tbetween Connor and notable authors and literary critics. Many of the letters pertain to guest lectures at the University of Chattanooga. Other correspondence, including the letters between Connor and Elizabeth Drew concern the development of a poetry study program for adults. Connor’s notes for his Time article about Robert Frost and number of plaques and honors received by the professor are also housed in the collection.

Biographical / Historical
A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, George Coleman Connor joined the staff of the University of Chattanooga in 1959 and served as the head of the English Department from 1963 through 1969. He was also the executive assistant to President William E. Masterson for three years, before returning to the classroom full time in 1970. He continued teaching as a Guerry Professor of English until his retirement in 1985. Outside of the University, Connor was the executive director of the Chattanooga Adult Education Council from 1952-1984.
