Scope and Contents

This collection consist of various newspaper clippings, personal items, and programs that relate to Charles Newcomb and his career at the University of Chattanooga as a professor of oratory and theatre, ranging from 1907 to 1915. The newspaper clippings refer to the plays, both school and local ones, that Newcomb directed or performed in. There are several programs from the plays and oratorical contests, as well as photographs of the play rehearsals. There is a copy of his autobiography/family scrapbook, and some other personal items including his Masters Diploma and Volume I of the Chattanooga produced humor magazine entitled The Wrinkle (1907).

Biographical / Historical

Charles Newcomb was a professor of oratory and theatre at the University of Chattanooga from 1908-1914. His father, G.T. Newcomb also taught at the University from 1894 until the early 1900s. Charles Newcomb directed and performed in many school and local plays, for which he received much recognition. He became Dean of the Oratory Department at the University of Chattanooga in 1912. Charles Newcomb was born in 1882 and died in 1956.
