Scope and Contents
This collection provides an interesting insight into the affairs of a Confederate Civil War Veteran, Moses H. Clift (1836-1911). The collection includes documents and correspondence from the war, as well as medals, banners, and certificates highlighting Clift's involvement in the United Confederate Veterans organization. Also included are documents outlining other family members' involvement with Civil War organizations, such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Biographical / Historical
Moses H. Clift (1836-1911) was a Confederate major during the Civil War. He served under Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry Corps and later served under General George G. Dibrell. He spent the years after the war as a prominent Chattanoooga attorney and as a brigadier general in the United Confederate Veterans. Clift was the grandfather of actor Montgomery Clift.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection was donated by Lillian Summers and Mary Porter to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on 1976 April 27. Summers and Porter donated the material on behalf of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, General A. P. Stewart Chapter, No. 81, who received the collection from Mrs. M. H. Clift when she chaired the group.
