Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of letters between Mills and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga library officials, specifically Dean of the Library, Joseph A. Jackson, concerning the books that Mill's donated to the library in the early 1990's. The books that he donated are related to Harry S Truman, economics, the United States intelligence community, Virginia Woolf, and Tennessee Williams. Also in the collection are two personal items relating to Mills: his autobiography, and a copy of his book entitled An Informal History of Technical Ceramics, which he wrote in 1995.

Biographical / Historical

William Mills was born in Chattanooga, in 1922. He graduated from Baylor School in 1937, and from the University of Chattanooga in 1941 with majors in Engish and Economics. The great-grandfather of Mills, D.M. Steward, established the D.M. Steward Manufacturing Company, which is headquartered in Chattanooga. William became the president of the Manufacturing Company in 1951, where he stayed until 1954, at which point he moved to Trenton, New Jersey to be president of the National Ceramic Company. Mills is closely associated with the University of Chattanooga the large collection of books that he donated to the Library. Mills passed away in 1997.
