Scope and Contents
This collection covers his years at the University of Chattanooga, from 1932 to 1936. He emphasized French as a foreign language, which led to his career for the rest of his life. His papers give good examples of the type of work expected of students at the University of Chattanooga during those years, and he took courses from some of the leading faculty of the University: Edwin Lindsey, Maxwell Smith, Terrell Tatum, and Culver Smith. There is additional post UC material, including graduate school work from the University of Wisconsin, some teaching material from UC and Middle Georgia College, and some playbills and theater programs.

Biographical / Historical
William Green Hope was a member of a prominent Chattanooga family. He was born on Lookout Mountain in 1916 and graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1936. He studied foreign languages at UC and continued these studies at the University of Wisconsin in 1936-1937. After that he returned to Chattanooga and was an instructor briefly at UC, and then Middle Georgia College (1939-1940). His fluency in French led to his serving as an interpreter for the American forces in France during World War II. After the war he taught in the extension colleges of the University of California, Vanderbilt University, and other schools in Aix-En-Provence, in France, where he spent the remainder of his life. During his life he composed two plays, in French, and these were performed in Paris. He died in France in 1993. He left no survivors.
