Scope and Contents

This collection contains mainly materials relating to her work with various theater groups in the community. There is a small amount of personal correspondence and other documents. There are also several items relating to the University and its curriculum. The collection contains administrative information, correspondence, and Ward's own notes relating to various University and community-sponsored theater groups, the Chattanooga Opera, the Festival Players, and a 1953 UN-inspired community pageant. Also included are scripts used by the various groups, printed promotional materials, and photos. There is a large collection of newspaper clippings, the bulk of which are reviews of performances by the Festival Players. The materials were created and collected by Ward from circa 1940 to 1990.

Biographical / Historical

Dorothy Hackett Ward was a prominent fixture on the Chattanooga arts scene from her time as a student at the University of Chattanooga through the end of her life. She graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1928 and went on to earn a master’s degree from Yale University’s School of Drama in 1946. Ward joined the University of Chattanooga faculty in 1938. She directed the University Players, the Harlequins, and the Children’s Theater while at the University, as well as a number of community productions. Professor Ward served as head of the Department of Drama and Speech for many years. In 1964 she was named Guerry Professor of Drama and Speech. She was also a founding member of the Chattanooga Opera, and remained active in its productions even after her retirement. She retired from the University in 1975, and began a repertory theater company based in Chattanooga, the Festival Players, which was warmly welcomed by the community. Dorothy Hackett Ward passed away in her home in Punta Gorda, Florida on November 18, 2001.
