Scope and Contents
This collection contains papers, photographs, scrapbooks, and other material belonging to Hubert "Hugo" Taliaferro. Jr., an American captured at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 regarding his life, his military service and the Taliaferro family. The collection contains papers and photographs from 1838 September 16 to 1979 May 9.

Biographical / Historical
James Hubert Taliaferro, Jr. (called Hugo or Hubert) was born on 1924 February 21 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to James Hubert Taliaferro, Sr. (called Hubert or Casper) and Ida Gilbert Taliaferro. Hugo grew up in Chattanooga and attended the McCallie School. During World War II he served in the United States Army and was captured by German forces during the Battle of the Bulge. When he was released at the end of the war he weighed only 72 pounds. Hubert's brother, Gilbert Taliaferro, also served during World War II and was killed in action in France on 1944 December 9. Following the war, Hugo returned to the United States and attended Davidson COllege before moving to New York City. Hubert Sr. and Ida built a new home in Rising Fawn, Georgia they called Tali High. Following his retirement Hugo returned to the Chattanooga area. He spent his retirement Working with his partner, the Reverend Joel W. Murchison, to remodel the home his parents had built and becoming an active member of Christ Church Episcopal Church in Chattanooga. He died on 2004 May 25 and is buried at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Hubert Taliaferro, Jr. donated this collection to the Chattanooga History Center on 1983 May 18. The Chattanooga History Center donated this collection to the Chattanooga Public Library and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on 2017 June 12.
