Biographical / Historical

Rock City Gardens is a tourist attraction on Lookout Mountain, Georgia in the greater Chattanooga, Tennessee area. Rock City opened to the public on May 21, 1932, created by Frieda Carter (1880-1964) and Garnet Carter (1883-1954). Rock City sits atop 14 acres of ancient rock formations. The idea for Rock City and the Fairyland neighborhood came from Frieda’s love for German Folklore. Upon Garnet’s death in 1954, the business was passed down to the Carters’ nephew where it has stayed in the family ever since.

Over the decades, Rock City sucessfully used a variety of advertisement strategies to draw in visitors. These advertisements include physical signage, postcards, memorabilia, photos, viewbooks, and maps. During the Great Depression the iconic Rock City barns were created as a way to market Rock City Gardens to motorists using the highways. As many as 900 barns were painted with the "See Rock City" logo. These barns were painted by local Chattanooga painter Clark Byers (1915-2004), who hand painted all of the signage for Rock City.

Rock City continues to operate as a popular tourist attraction in the Chattanooga area, where it receives nearly half a million visitors every year.
