Biographical / Historical

The Institute of Justice was a series of public addresses, forums, and roundtable discussions sponsored by the University of Chattanooga. The first Institute of Justice was held in 1930, and the second was in 1932 continued. These forums focused on "problems in which the element of justices entered" with the working definition of "justice" as "all that which is fair and just in the social order." Modeled after the Institute of Public Affairs of the University of Virginia, these events bolstered the relationship between the University and the metropolitan community. The University of Chattanooga Board of Trustees noting that the events were an opportunity for the community to "keep step with the advance made by the university along cultural lines". The University held forums like the Institute of Justice intermittently throughout the 1930s, although each with a different theme. For example, Tennessee Valley Institute was held in 1934, and education was the theme for the 1937 forums.
