Biographical / Historical

James E. Drinnon served as interim Chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1973 to 1974 and as Chancellor from 1974 to 1981. During his administration, the student population, program offerings, and the campus itself all grew significantly. In 1980, student enrollment was well over 7,000. The Brock Scholars program was launched in 1979 with funding from the UC Foundation and the Lyndhurst Foundation and pre-professional curriculums were added throughout the late 1970s. Finally the campus expanded from 35 to 79 acres during the 1970s, with a number of buildings completed under Drinnon's tenure, including the University Center, the Boling Apartments, Holt Hall, and the Fine Arts Center.
