Guerry, William A.
Biography
William Alexander Guerry (1861-19280), a native of South Carolina, served as the bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina from 1907-1928, as well as a Chaplain and Professor of Homiletics and Pastoral Theology at the University of the South. Guerry believed in a "chruch broad enough to embrace within its communion every living human soul." One of Guerry's goals was to desegregate the church, and because of this, he was shot at Saint Phillip's Church by a priest who openly opposed his goals of advancing racial equality, and died five days later on June 9, 1928.
