Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, photographs, military records, and memorabilia collected during Captain Chauncey's service as a Union officer in the United States Civil War. The scope of the collection ranges from 1830 to 1950.The collection includes material related to the Civil War career of Captain John D.P.A.M. Chauncey, of Madison, Indiana. Captain Chauncey was with the 13th Indiana Volunteers. There is also correspondence relating to Captain Chauncey and his descendents, some of whom lived in Chattanooga. Included in the collection are items of clothing from officers and soldiers, Civil War documents, books, medals, and company books.

Biographical / Historical

John Chauncey was born in Madison Indiana on August 15, 1820. Chauncey served as Captain of Company D during the Civil War with the United States Army's 13th Indiana Cavalry Regiment. After the war, Chauncey returned to Madison, where he died on July 3, 1877 in a coal oil explosion.
