Biographical / Historical
James Livingood (1910-2005) was a member of the University of Chattanooga history faculty from 1937 to 1975. He served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences 1937-1966, then as dean of the university 1966-1969. He was recognized with the designation Guerry Professor of History, the highest award for faculty achievement at UC. Livingood was born in Birdsboro, PA. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1934 and earned the Ph.D. in history from Princeton in 1937. Livingood was a civil war historian who also had a keen interest in Chattanooga’s local history.
